WEEKEND has the TORNADOS toppled
How probable do you feel it is for a team to emerge back victorious in a cricket match having given away control in the entire first innings and one-third into the second innings? How often have you witnessed a depleted bowling side running through an opponent team with a meager total to defend? How often have you sat open-mouthed since someone took a catch that resembled Adam Bacher dismissing Sachin Tendulkar at the Cape Town test in 1997? And how often has such a catch triggered a series of good catches to run down a team?
Anyone who can’t remember having seen all these happening in a single match have missed a match of their lifetime although this is club cricket. But this was club cricket at its best. It was a cricket match to be relished and remembered for more than a lifetime and generations to come. I’ll talk about this even to my great-grandchildren with everlasting freshness and I’m sure every team member would. It was a classic example of a match that contained unlimited team spirit, co-ordination, vigor, enthusiasm and a verve from one team that was destined to win. Even if God Fate had thought otherwise, WCC would have crafted its own script to rewrite it. Read on….
With all plans set on the previous evening for the big game, a must win game, I was most likely to sit out due to a thumb injury I picked up during practice. Vinod too had followed suit and that meant we had to pull in Sriraj to be a part of playing XI. And he generously agreed – a million thanks to him and more than that. More problems arose when Ragha had to rule himself out from the match due to unavoidable circumstances. The impact of his absence was not negligible – he was one of the 5 bowlers we had in our squad and of course he was our frontline bowler. With no other alternative, I had to play with the injured thumb although I wasn’t even in a position to hold my bat properly. We knew that the opponents were a pretty decent bowling unit as observed from the statistics of their previous matches – and we were prepared for it. As lucky as it can get, I called correct during the toss and immediately announced that we were batting first. That still might have been a debatable decision considering the fact that we were a bowler short, but we wanted to play to our strengths and not bothering about opponents’ weaknesses.
Venkat got off the mark first ball with a light tap towards mid-on and Karthik sent one above covers for our first boundary. He fell in the first over trying to make room only to see his off stump disturbed. Soon later, Vishak and Venkat gave some catching practice to the fielders trying to strike over them. 3 wickets down right at the start and with Venkat back in the pavilion –this was something very new to us. Andy went in and looked very much settled out there with 2 wonderful boundaries before he mis-pulled a new bowler straight to mid-wicket. Kartik, rechristened “Mangalam Sir” by Venkat, went in with high confidence and in Murali’s company ensured that we didn’t lose any more wickets through the first half of our innings. Come drinks break and soon after he lost his control to offer a sitter. Murali on the other end rotated singles much easier than any of the others and at the same time protecting his wicket very well. I joined Murali in the middle and it was important that we didn’t lose any more wickets until 25th over. I wasn’t defensive, as I knew we definitely needed to rotate singles until I played all around a left-armer’s typical drifting spin delivery to see my middle stump rocked back. Batting at #7, I had to save the team from crisis as that was my key role in the team. That was very irresponsible of me to get out at that stage. I vow this will never happen again. But Murali showed immense persistence and few runs came in here and there with the help of Sriraj, Sunil & Ashwin – we put up a paltry 124 on the board for our depleted set of bowlers to defend.
Getting all-out within the stipulated time meant that “TORNADOS” (our opponents) had 30 overs to chase our target. We knew from ball #1 it was impossible to defend this score unless we bowl them out. Kartik started off with his big swingers and made life difficult for the batsmen whenever he pitched the ball. His full tosses were punished – but he produced a beauty of an in-swinging yorker to send the opening batsman back. But runs kept coming from the other end till I got a surprise bowler, Murali, into the attack. It was surprising even to most of our team members. It was a gamble taken by me, but a little calculated one, as I observed that the batsmen were not comfortable with swinging deliveries. Murali, although doesn’t have too much control of his swing, does swing the ball away from right handers and started with few wides. He then pitched one full outside off and the batsman driving it sent the ball over the cover region for what we all thought was a definite six – until Sriraj had different ideas. Converging towards the ball from deep cover, just as we all thought that the ball had reached maximum, he leapt up in the air timing his jump to perfection to pouch the ball safely with both hands that reminded everyone of Adam Bacher. This was the moment we all thought we could bring the match back within our reach. Andy’s words still ring in our ears – “If a person has taken such a catch we need to win this match”. From then on there was no looking back. I gave Murali another over – a bigger gamble – but he responded well with another wicket when Vishak held a good low catch at short mid-wicket. Few catches were misjudged and unattended, but we still kept on the pressure with Sunil being introduced. At that time they were 61/3 in 9 overs – well placed in their chase.
Sunil was at his mighty best right from start and kept the batsman on their toes with his rising deliveries. What was even mightier was the way in which Vijay started off his spell that left everyone in the field spell-bound. Few of his deliveries were untraceable as they fired itself into Andy’s gloved hands like bullets fired from a sniper. We kept an attacking field with Sunil and Vijay bowling in tandem and they bowled brilliantly to keep the batsmen in check and choking them giving little away. Sunil picked up 2 wickets before the drinks break with his deliveries that kicked off from good length – both batsmen offering sitters to point and short-midwicket fielders respectively where Venkat and Vishak made no mistake with their catches. At half time into the 2nd session they needed 50 more runs and more importantly we needed 5 more wickets. Till then I hadn’t introduced Ashwin only because I didn’t know whether to break Sunil or Vijay – a confusion that Imran Khan would have had when Wasim and Waqar were ripping through any side. Literally I had to ask opinions from almost everyone on this and finally decided to break Sunil after another over from him – the only reason being that it was the end suited for Ashwin. First over after drinks, Sunil induced a thick edge from the opening batsman (who was still around) straight into the hands of “Passionate cricketer” who garnered the sharp chance with ease – of course with his usual facial expression. 4 more to go and I pulled in Ashwin for his first over from the far end. He started off well and suddenly let loose a full toss which the batsmen heaved to deep square leg far away from where Vijay was positioned. As strong as his bowling on that day, he raced towards the ball and caught it with mighty ease – a very very good catch. Not many would have held on to it with so much ease. Ashwin had striked in his first over. 3 more to go and we were all fired up in the field. Ashwin, in his next over, produced a similar full toss that again went to Vijay, who running in this time, took another gem of a catch at deep square leg. That was 2 in 2 for Ashwin with 2 more to go. At the other end Vijay kept on tormenting the batsman with his fearsome pace. Ashwin’s next over had a left-handed batsman trapped in front and then there was 1 more to go – not before Venkat split a dolly of his own bowling in the previous over. We almost had our hands on the victory but had to wait till one more fell. With 104/9 on the board, Vijay induced an edge in the 23rd over of the innings straight to Andy’s gloves and that was the moment. All eleven of us went berserk and ran like mad. Vinod and “little Ashwin” came in racing from the pavilion to celebrate with us. I went straight to Murali, hugged him as tight as I could and immediately all smaller groups converged to form a huge hugging cloud of 13 people – 13 victorious people who formed the mighty WCC team that toppled the “TONARDOS” and redefined what a team looks like while playing this game of cricket.
For all I can say, we proved and discovered most of our real selves in the field. The energy we all displayed in the field was amazing and the bowling was awesome. The bowlers won the match for us more than the ever-persistent Murali who got to receive the Man of the match award for his 36 invaluable runs and 2 wickets. Vijay and Sunil were awesome with their length and I am proud of those guys. For once, our batting unit failed, but I ensure this will never happen again. Ragha was truly missed, but he would have missed the match much more. This was like winning a world cup in front of a home crowd. Millions of thanks to Vinod and “little Ashwin” – and this was one of the best matches I’ve ever played. And I hope every team member will agree to this.
Aditya Ravindran – Captain, WCC.

Still i feel the energy that we all had in the ground.. All the 11 hearts were beating for the same glory..
All the 11 minds were thinking about one victory.
All the 11 souls were integrated into one…
When all this happens.. No one can defeat this team.!!
That’s what happened on 30-8-2009…
A day even the umpires wont forget…
I don want to talk about our batting.. for obvious reasons though..!!
Coming to our fielding and bowling.. the moment we formed the huddle before we entered the field.. the energy level was pumping.. everyone were ready to explode.. We were all charged up.. geared up.. Raring to go..
“Yes i am raring.. ” (:P)
even before we took our field positions.. Kartik was concentrating on the 22 yards.. when i saw that.. my adrenaline doubled up..
If there had been any punishment for Excessive appealing..surely we wud have got that.. because.. if the ball misses the bat or if it hits the pad.. 11 voices were sent into the umpire’s ears.. the appeal was deafening..
When we saw the ball rattling the stumps to get our 1st wicket.. the noise increased and the celebrations were on par with England winning the Ashes..
Every bowler wanted to contribute.. every fielder wanted to give his 100%. this is what we call it team game.. we supported each other.. we enjoyed each other’s success.. the Team had only one heart.. and the Team had only one thought.. VICTORY…!!!
We achieved that.. we were flying after the last wicket fell.. i am still getting the same goosebumps while writing this.. we formed a huddle and were jumping around…
I am in tears now.. literally.. this WIN is somethin special.. this is what we were longing for…
Thank u GOD for giving us this wonderful victory and more importantly the wonderful feeling.. this will be fresh in my mind til i breath my last..!!!
To all my WCC fellow mates.. – LOVE YOU GUYS..!!!!!!
I am proud to say that. this is the best team i have ever played and i am sure.. everyone will agree with me..!!!
WE RULE THE WORLD….!!!!!

I know you’ll be the first person to comment. Will never forget the persistence and tenacity you displayed with the bat. We’ll all learn from you. And we’ll get this winning run going along.

Ya truely said this was a gem of a match to be played .I really enjoyed the play and was praying to god to give 10 wickets in first ten balls so that we can go home earlier,as they were hinted to be a weak batting side.Vare Va Murali played what he had to,to ensure that team posts a decent score.Hard luck for me this time too,but in fitness not in catching as i opted out to sit due to my finger injury.Vishak the man from whom i wanted to learn fielding was electric in all fielding departments.Adi anna pls don tell millions of thanks because i did only my job and it was fully for the team. And next is sriraj’s catch was fabulous. During his run for the catch i murmured myself “Oh my god!! is this boy going to land in the dirty area???”,but after his catch i cant believe that he had taken. The match i enjoyed the most and i will be back into the 11 for the next crucial match.Hope that i ll perform better in next match. And a request to the teammates to be as electrifying as u were in this match.Hope the same energy and spirit continues within us always till the end of the tournament.
Aug 31, 2009 @ 18:16:06
You rightly reminded me of vishak’s fielding performance. He was truly the most improved fielder this match. Didn’t let anything pass through him and was aggressive in body language. His 2 catches were well taken. And the million thanks is to communicate to the readers about the importance of 12th man and how integral he can be to the side. I know you took efforts to go to the far end and give sunil a drink now and then. That effort is brilliant

one great catch ..it said “impossible is nothing”
and we ripped them..
adi anna..the blog is nice as usual..i feel u should have written something about sledging..which we usually dont do..
i am writing this for other readers..please publish it
sledging is an art and we have few masters of that art..
124 was not at all target (forget competitive target)..all batsmen threw our wickets,i agree but not for the opponents so called sledging…i remember wat “mangalam sir” told me,
mangalam sir: ” dei avanga na aadum podhu indha batsmen a vechu contain panu nu sollikite irundhanga, naa out ana approm edho avanga sonadhula dhan out aiten sondasha pattukitanga”
and some more team mates narrated such stupid sledging incidents..no doubt their team had “big mouths…”
though i am not big supporter of sledging i felt that we should play some mind games..and we have andy anna ..who is pro in sledging.he started to warm up for sledging when ashwin and sunil were trying to play entire 30 overs..
and he was at his best during the 2nd innings..
i wud like to narrate few incidents…
INCIDENT 1
the first thing that comes to my mind was sunil having bowled a great delivery ..
sunil: why dont u get some runs man
karthik’s enemy look like(i dont know his name): why dont u get my wicket.
andy: common man he is getting frustrated his responding
karthik’s enemy look like: ofcourse,i will reply i have mouth
after seeing his batting,i felt he had only mouth and nothing else.frankly speaking to play vijayanads pace u should not only have mouth ,u should have some……(i am sure adi anna will censor it)
and just after this small talk i saw andy anna was speaking something to the batsemen..which frustrated him even more.
INCIDENT 2
ok that look alike one: machi summa nillu, wide liye win paniduvom..( ya..that wud have happened if i had the ball)
mangalam sir: 70 wides poda mattom machi..(even we have some people with big talking mouths…mangalam sir has got some attitude apart from his ever talking mouth..i must admit that)
the next ball the batsmen gets out..
andy anna: nera potta idhu dhan agum machiiii
. (by now i felt that” look alike” has got 2 big things..)
1.big mouth
2.big bulb
there were many such incidents which i “think” was useful in manipulating the batsmen..
the reason i “think ” and i am not sure of the fact is because..
to be manipulated u most have some thinking just “mouth ” is not enough..
note: i am writing this “sub-post” in an offensive manner not because i want to hurt the feelings of opponents and the look alike in particular..
i am writing this because i was hurt by their poor show of attitude…(wcc always played the game with good sporting attitude and i am proud that my friends have great attitude and they are gem of the guys)
we shake hands after the match
and to end
“we have mouths too and also we have some….err(i know it will be censored again)”
Aug 31, 2009 @ 18:36:32
I remember one more comment which i think noone would have noticed.
After 6 wickets were down and when the batsman hit ashwin’s full toss to deep square leg, the captain at non striker said to his mate “thats six thats six” before vijay caught that. Murali came running to the pitch and shouted, “its not six. Its now seven”. I enjoyed that comment

Beautiful explanation of the sledging events. I didn’t include it because the post was already big enough. But i agree that it would have added some fun. The other captain was too sensitive and sunil and andy played with it very well. Cheers mate

ha ha…how come i forget that murali’s incident..cha very bad of me
Aug 31, 2009 @ 18:49:40
I jus don have words to express it out guys.. it was altogether a game that had an international standard of fighting spirit and professionalism.. especially in the way the bowlers threw their hands up after our so-casual-batting… i remember each and every moment of that match right infront of me.. i guess it will take more than a week to come out of this
i guess this will act as a feather in our cap.. much more of which is still to come
congrats mate
Aug 31, 2009 @ 18:56:07
This was the best ever match for WCC. Thunderous Victory.
Congrats to my dearest friend murali.keep it up man. Hope WCC Lifts the trophy
Aug 31, 2009 @ 22:58:28
Thank u machi..!!!!!
WE WILL DO IT ADHI.. WE WILL..
Sep 01, 2009 @ 11:34:55
Karthi…. You started off very well and that boundary you hit made me feel elated. It was unfortunate that you didn’t carry on. I still feel that you are such a batsman who can put up a quickfire innings that will help the middle order play without any pressure. We all believe that you can do things like what Sehwag does. Believe more in yourself nd you will be able to win us matches with ease. Cheers.

This game is so special that, I have no other games in mind that I have participated in, to be compared with!
Mr. Sensible played well for his 34 and was at his best during the field! Yar missed that comment live though! It sounds cool. Thanks for that performance da! Your knock prevented a collapse which would have caused a defeat for sure!
Mangalam sir and Mr. X where brilliant with the ball. Mr X’s two catches were awesome! And special thanks to SRIRAJ for that stunning catch. It would definitely inspire everyone, and result in overall improvement in the fielding…
Adhi anna, Field placements and the Bowling plans were stunning. Well, Calculated gambles always pays off!
Vishak has turned out to be a specialized mid-on -mid-wicket fielder. Great catch man!
Andy anna was at his usual best with the gloves and was spectacular support to the bowler!
But please don’t sledge our own players anna. (victim- ASHWIN).
For Sunil, I hope you play all the matches with the same enthusiasm and aggression! Your spell with Mr. X was decisive!
And I am Terribly Sorry for letting you guys down! Promise you that I would never do that again!
Aug 31, 2009 @ 23:03:56
Thanks a lot da..!!! I wud have loved to have a 100 run partnership with u when i came in. same way as we did against RUNS AND WICKETS team.. if u had been patient enough another century was on the cards. and as usual i wud have played second fiddle.. but that didnt happen.. its ok cool.. we will pick another special occasion to do that for the team….
And one more important thing.. u never let us down.. u are an integral part of the team.. this victory was not achieved by any individual brilliance.. this is a complete Team Effort… We did it..!!
Ur come on BOUY is itself an huge boost for everyone..!!
Sep 01, 2009 @ 19:27:28
Next match we are going for a 100 runs partnership for sure! what do you say?
Sep 01, 2009 @ 14:30:51
Hey Bouuuuuy… You are one of the leading performer in all departments da… And you have been more than consistent enough to worry. Although you missed out this match, I’m sure you will fire back next match. And your energy in the field is getting contagious enough to improve our fielding standards. Your ideas in the field helps me as a captain always.
come on and do your best BOUUUUUY!!!!!!!

It was one hell of a match and I am glad that we people seems to be enjoying each others success very much!

Aug 31, 2009 @ 19:26:24
Every pakistani says insha allah after every word and I am not going to be different in anyway.
I prayed for a good innings when i went into the field, i did play a long innings in terms of balls and tried to seal one end without losing a wicket. Anyways i wasn’t happy the way i played despite murali supporting me from the other end and consoling me every time he thought i lost my cool.
After the poor batting display i was completely down in the dumps. Something which was really motivating was when the most experienced man Andy said. ” We have scored 124 and we have 123 runs to save our skin. When those guys can get us out for little. we can get them for even lesser runs.” Thanks andy for ur motivational word.
When we set our foot on the field. most of them were down but i was a bit confident that I would help the team do some good. The tradition of a huddle and a pep talk went on directly to our hearts. Our adrenaline pumped and when it was time for the final cheer after the huddle. there was very little noise made by all. Andy said there was little noise made and was short of enthusiasm. I managalam sir, insisted we take up another cheer with all the enthusiasm in our hearts and we shouted ” Shaa boo three “.
I went to the pitch praying and tried invoking god in every form to support us and he did it. We all enjoyed the victory.
I Shall continue with what happened in the match. This is another review in the comment form. please bear.
Sep 01, 2009 @ 11:30:39
Truly, Andy’s motivational words were similar to those of Jacques Kallis before RSA chased down 434. For those who dont know what it was – when all RSA players were depressed after Aussies hit them for 434 runs in 50 overs, Mr. Kallis came into the dressing room and said, “Guys, I think they are 20 runs short”. And that triggered the biggest victory chase ever in ODI history. Similarly our win will always remain one of the best wins for WCC.
